Before you recoil in shock, I'm not talking about Jell-O. I'm talking about the amino acid and collagen rich Gelatin.
Why I consider Gelatin one of my staple super foods!
Hormone balance: the amino acids in gelatin play a large told in metabolic rate, thyroid function and hormone production.
°It offsets the effects of excess estrogen in the body as a result if too much exposure to xenoestrogens.
°It promotes optimal thyroid health by balancing amino acids, Tryptophan & Cysteine, that inhibit thyroid function.
°Reduces stress by restricting those amino acids. Gelatin can then more effectively combat stress hormones.
Improve digestion: because gelatin remains hydrophilic (water loving) even when heated, it aids digestion of cooked food. Raw food tends to be hydrophilic & is easier to digest because it blends well with digestive juices. Also- the Glycine stimulates stomach acid production therefore improving digestion. Side note* increasing stomach acid often alleviates a bunch of issues.
~Poor digestion underlies all hormone imbalances, improving stomach acidify & nutrient absorption supports the root of hormone balances~
Leaky Gut: gelatin has been shown to heal the lining of the digestive system. Sally Fallon, author of "Nourishing Traditions", has said that gelatin is the "mortar" sealing in the gaps of the digestive wall.
Joint & Bone: Those with arthritis listen up! Gelatin is a wonderful anti-inflammatory as well as preventing & repairing the degeneration of cartilage. The Glycine also increases calcium absorption which promotes bone density & joint health.
Detoxification: the amino acid Glycine assists the liver with its housecleaning duties. The ability of the liver to do its job sufficiently is limited by the amount of Glycine that is available. It's obvious why we should provide it with all we can!!
~Given the toxicity of our world today the huge amount of Glycine in the diet is crucial with the nearly constant detoxification that is required to maintain health~
Suggestions for using gelatin: first and foremost bone broth - "Nature's Multivitamin". If you aren't a broth drinker you can add it to anything! Replace water for broth in recipes, add to gravies, etc! Or you can use a good quality gelatin powder. I love Perfect brand Gelatin (in Herbal Cabinet later this week!) I sprinkle it into soups, yogurt, and make fruit snacks (super easy and a yummy way to get gelatin into kids!). Smoothie or green drinker?? Gelatin makes an excellent protein powder (6-10 grams per tablespoon)!
Other benefits of gelatin - skin elasticity & reduced cellulite! Healthy hair & nails, weight loss (high protein & amino acid for the metabolism), improves sleep.
