Today's tip and topic is on at little unknown and overlooked "weed" in your backyard!
This little cutie is has been recently demonstrated having better nutritional quality than the major cultivated vegetables! And is considered a powerfood.
🌿 Used since Prehistoric times. Widely used in Chinese medicine. Pulled up and discarded in the US.
Among the benefits it provides, such as stimulates blood circulation, protection against osteoporosis, aids in weight loss, lowers bad cholesterol, helps prevent lung & oral cancer and helps with eye health, I want to talk about some specific benefits.
°High in Omega-3 fatty acids. 5 times higher than spinach! Great choice for vegetarians. °Cancer prevention. High in vitamin A&C (to prevent lung & oral cancer) it also contains Betalain compounds which are connected with anti-mutagenic effects on the body, meaning they prevent free radicals from causing mutations in healthy cells, thereby helping prevent the development of cancer. 📃Organicfacts.net
Some nutritional facts:
Potassium: 494mg
Magnesium:6mg
Calcium:65mg
Phosphorus:44mg
ALA & LNA (highest in any green vegetable)
Highest amount of Alphatocopherol (vitamin E) 22mg
Asorbic acid 26mg

So go out and just pluck and eat them! My son calls them our #gardenvitamins. Or you can toss them into a salad. *if you are prone to kidney stones, avoid Purslane or boil them first to reduce the Oxalic acid.

One last note I felt impressed to talk about. I truly believe (as did my Grandpa) that God supplies us with exactly what we need by putting these wonderful things in the ground around us. For example 2 yrs so we had an abundance of Purslane. Last year (although doing absolutely nothing different) we didn't have any. This year, an abundance. This year, Dyer's Woad is growing like crazy and annoying everyone... But we have had more flu strains this year than I've seen in recent past (Woad is wonderful for influenza among other things). Take advantage of these wonderful "weeds" around you! You never know when that's all you'll have available to you.
